Safety Measures To Be Reinstalled At Malone Road Accident Site
Safety measures are to be reinstated at an accident black spot on the Malone Road in Belfast.
Student Enda Dolan (18) was killed when he was hit by a van at the bend on the road on 15 October. He was walking home to Queen's Elms on the night of the accident.
A safety crash barrier had been removed from the site three weeks prior to the accident.
There have been increasing calls for the barrier to be reinstated at the site, or other safety measures to be taken.
The Department for Regional Development (DRD) said that arrangements are being made for new safety measures to be installed.
It is understood that a like-for-like barrier will not be installed but that kerbs at the site will be raised to deflect any traffic away from the pavement with a new waist-high fence.
A report by the BBC has also revealed that when the DRD Roads Service ordered the barrier to be removed they did not know why it had been installed in the first place.
The BBC report the barrier was installed in 1977 following the deaths of two female students at the same bend on the road.

Road death figures are lowest in 50 years
Figures released today by the Department of the Environment have revealed that road deaths in Northern Ireland last year were at the lowest level in 50 years. The total number of road deaths in 2005 totalled 136, the lowest number since 1952 when 133 people lost their lives at at time when there was one eighth of the number of vehicles on the road.
