Fermanagh Farmer Fined Over Pollution Offence

A County Fermanagh farmer has pleaded guilty and been fined £2,000 and almost £3,500 in fish-restocking costs for making a polluting discharge at a waterway.

John O'Neill, of Lettermoney Road, Irvinestown also had to pay £40 Court Costs and £15 Offenders Levy at Enniskillen Magistrates Court.

On 25 July 2013, Water Quality Inspectors received a report of pollution and dead fish in the Ballycassidy River.

Inspectors continued with investigations on 26 July 2013 and traced the source of pollution to farm premises owned by Mr O'Neill. Two large silage pits were examined and a flow of silage effluent was discovered flowing from the smaller pit across the yard towards a lagoon area. The polluting discharge was observed entering the Irvinestown tributary from a culvert.

Security Alert In Downpatrick

A security alert has been put in place in Downpatrick, County Down, following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Police attended the scene at Owenbeg Avenue today. The road has been closed along with St Patrick's Avenue and Stream Street.

There are no further details at present.

L'Derry Building Plan Digitisation Project Announced

L'Derry's historic building plans are to become available to the public for the first time, after a new digitisation and cataloguing initiative was announced.

Guildhall Press and Derry City Council's Archive and Genealogy Service are working on the pilot project.

The collection of Historic Building Plans for Derry will be conserved, digitised and made more accessible.

It will contain plans, elevations and design details for a range of significant buildings and architecture across the city, including the Guildhall, the War Memorial, Carlisle Bridge and local schools, churches and residences.

Mayor Brenda Stevenson said: "This is a fantastic project that will give the general public and researchers greater accessibility to historic buildings of the city through an innovative archival digitsation programme."

New Charter To Ensure Equal Learning For Belfast

A new publication and learning charter has been published that will seek to ensure all Belfast citizens have equal access to learning opportunities.

The Belfast Strategic Partnership's (BSP's) Lifelong Learning (LLL) Thematic Group has launched 'Belfast a Learning City'.

Speaking at the launch of the publication, Danny Power, Chairperson of the BSP's LLL Thematic Group, said: "It is my pleasure on behalf of the Lifelong Learning Thematic Group to introduce our first publication: 'Belfast a Learning City'. This publication can help shape a positive, proactive agenda for change in tackling inequality across the city and can act as a catalyst across central government lines."
