Call For Devolution Of Broadcasting Powers
Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has called for broadcasting powers to be devolved to Northern Ireland.
The call follows the revelation Scotland is to get more powers over broadcasting as part of the post-referendum settlement.
The Minister said: "Broadcasting is a currently a reserved matter as all significant policy responsibility lies with the British Government.
"However, proposals have been agreed which will give Scotland’s Government more powers on broadcasting matters. These include a consultative role in reviewing the BBC’s Charter, and a greater role in relation to broadcasting watchdog OFCOM.
"It is likely that Wales will get the same powers. In this context, the North will be left behind, a view increasingly felt by those in the broadcasting industry.
"I have written to my counterpart in London, Ed Vaizey, highlighting the need for parity and reiterating the call for a transfer of broadcasting powers."
Minister Ní Chuilín continued: "Broadcasting not only has a crucial and central role in our democracy, but also in obtaining the full cultural and economic benefits of our creative industries. I want to ensure the principle of editorial and creative control is exercised in the North of Ireland on behalf of local audiences. I want thriving production businesses created taking our local talent onto an international stage.
"If our Executive had responsibility for broadcasting we would be much better placed to take action to realise the potential of our broadcasting industry."
