Lord Mayor follows a ‘highway to health’
The people of Belfast are being urged to follow the ‘highway to health’ by taking the first steps on the ‘yellow brick road’ to a healthier and more active lifestyle.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Martin Morgan, this morning joined dozens of walkers, young and old, in putting their best foot forward for the launch of the annual Belfast Week of Walking, which this year takes place between September 6 and 14.
“Walking is the easiest and most accessible way of keeping fit,” said the Lord Mayor.
“Just ten to 30 minutes of brisk walking each day can help make you feel good, provide more energy, help you sleep easier, reduce stress, improve your outlook on life, keep your heart strong, reduce blood pressure and help manage your weight,” he pointed out.
The Week of Walking features a programme of walking events to suit all ages and fitness levels. Events planned for the week include Walk To Work Day, the Belfast Classic Golf Challenge, City Centre tours and pub walking tours among other things.
The 2003 Week of Walking also sees the launch of ‘Highway To Health 2’, a new initiative developed from the popular ‘Highway To Health’ project which has been running across Northern Ireland since 1998.
‘Highway To Health 2’ comprises a series of walking routes, all around a mile long, based around nine of Belfast’s leisure centres at Andersonstown, Avoniel, Ballysillan, Grove, the Indoor Tennis Arena, Maysfield, Olympia, Shankill and Whiterock.
