Attack On Police Bears 'Hallmarks Of Dissident Activity'

Police officers have said the attack on two of its officers on Tuesday evening bear the hallmarks of dissident activity.

It is suspected a device was thrown at a police vehicle after officers were responding to a routine burglary call at 10:30am in Victoria Parade.

The device exploded in mid-air and damaged a parked car, smashing its windscreen.

Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said: "If someone had been inside this vehicle, they most likely would have sustained serious injuries or could have been killed.

"We know that these types of incidents are carried out by a small but mindless number of people within our communities.

"They have shown a callous disregard for the safety of the local community and the police officers who serve it.

"We are very fortunate this morning that no one was killed or seriously injured as this incident occurred in a residential area, putting the lives of those living there at serious risk."

Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw continued, appealing to anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity to get in contact.

He added: "If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111".
