Early Release Prisoners Should Carry Out Unpaid Community Work - Ross
The DUP is proposing that prisoners who benefit from the early release scheme should be required to carry out unpaid community work to serve out the rest of their sentence.
DUP MLA Alastair Ross said the proposal would apply to the lowest risk prisoners.
Mr Ross has tabled the proposal as an amendment to the Justice Bill which is to be put before the Assembly.
Mr Ross said: "The powers for the Department of Justice to allow certain prisoners out of prison on early release already exist, and whilst they can attach some conditions such as the attendance at AA meetings or anger management, they cannot compel an offender released early to undertake any unpaid work programmes or community service.
"The amendment means that those who benefit from early release would serve out the remainder of their sentence in unpaid community work."
