Current Adoption Legislation Is 'Not Fit For Purpose' - McKinney
The current adoption legislation is "not fit for purpose", according to the SDLP.
Health Spokesperson and South Belfast MLA Fearghal McKinney has challenged the new Health Minister to move on adoption legislation.
Mr McKinney said: "The SDLP believes personal ministerial views should not be allowed to impact on legislation designed to benefit children.
"Current legislation is antiquated and not fit for purpose with many children moving through different homes and residential care settings, sometimes up to 15 times, before being adopted. This has led to negative health and educational outcomes.
"We are now calling on the new Health Minister, who has already indicated that he may be prepared to move on this issue, to move swiftly to ensure the legislation can be enacted before the end of the current mandate."

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.

The Health Minister has confirmed that he has requested an early meeting with health service trade unions to discuss next steps on pay offers for 2024/25. Due to Northern Ireland's budgetary constraints, the Minister is unable to deliver the desired pay settlements for this year.

Poots Orders Alcohol Price Report
The major accident of the Odyssey Arena in Belfast earlier this month in which more than 100 young people were treated for the alcohol effects have forced Health Minister Edwin Poots to order a report on the impact of a minimum price for alcohol in NI. Mr Poots said he was concerned about the availability of alcohol at "pocket money prices".
