Queen's And BCC To Become More Eco-Friendly
Queen's University and Belfast City Council have launched a new initiative that will help both organisations make major energy savings and become more eco-friendly.
A new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit has been installed by Queen's on the Main Site, beside Botanic Gardens, which will reduce the carbon emissions of the organisations.
The £1.5 million CHP scheme works by generating electricity and also capturing heat produced during the process. In turn, the heat is used to warm buildings and provide hot water.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Arder Carson, said: "I am delighted that through this collaboration we are leading the way in terms of protecting the environment and promoting energy efficiency. Congratulations to all involved in progressing this showcase scheme."
Queen's University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor James McElnay, said: "Queen's is committed to making a positive impact on our community and around the world and this joint enterprise between Queen’s University and Belfast City Council is testimony to that. We hope that through the new Combined Heat and Power Plant we will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also lead by example and inspire others to embrace eco-friendly initiatives."
