Cross-Party Talks To Begin At Stormont

Northern Ireland's Secretary of State is to begin cross-party talks at Stormont later today, Tuesday.

Theresa Villiers is expected to attempt to resolve the political impasse after police claimed that IRA members were involved in the murder of former republican prisoner Kevin McGuigan.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) announced on Monday there will be no further meetings of the Northern Ireland Executive until the crisis over the IRA has been resolved.

NI First Minister Peter Robinson said: "Pending a satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues, business will not be as usual. As a first step there will be no further meetings of the Northern Ireland Executive unless we deem that there are exceptional circumstances."

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, met with Ms Villiers on Monday. He said: I am hopeful that the talks process will allow the parties in Northern Ireland to chart a positive path forward. I have no doubt that, with the necessary will and determination, agreement is possible and I urge all parties to engage fully and meaningfully, so that this critical opportunity is not squandered."
