Stormont Committee Reject Adjournment

Stormont's business committee has rejected a proposal to adjourn the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy welcomed the decision and said it should be "upheld" and "respected" by the two governments.

Mr Murphy said: "It has been a huge mistake made by those who brought a criminal investigation into the brutal murders of Jock Davison and Kevin McGuigan into the political institutions. The police should be allowed to complete their investigation.

"There is an urgent need given recent developments to resolve the outstanding difficulties through a talks process.

"Both governments should make it clear that they will not suspend the institutions.

"They would be acting unilaterally in breach of previous international agreements subscribed to by all the parties."

Ulster Unionist Leader Mike Nesbitt said the UUP will "not protect a lie".

Mr Nesbitt said: "The only basis on which we will support an adjournment of the Northern Ireland Assembly is if Gerry Adams injects some honesty and reality into the debate about the status of the IRA in 2015. If the Chief Constable can do it, and the Secretary of State can do it, and the Taoiseach can do it, I do not think it is a big ask of the great peace maker."

Earlier, DUP Leader Peter Robinson said his party would resign from the Executive if Stormont is not suspended or adjourned.
