Refurb Work On Basement Hall Complete

Refurbishment work on a basement hall at a church in Belfast City Centre has been completed.

The £350,000 refurb work at May Street Presbyterian Church is part of the Urban Soul basement area and will be made available for community-based activities and Christian outreach.

The 1,400 sq ft hall, which boasts an entertainments licence and disabled access, can accommodate up to 120 people.

The lead funder for the project, which also involved the renovation of toilet facilities and the entrance lobby, was Belfast City Council, which provided £200,000 through its £5 million Local Investment Fund, with additional support from the Alpha Programme (managed by Groundwork NI) and Biffa Award, plus the Listed Places of Worship Scheme.

Amalgamation Of Tow Post-Primary Schools In L'Derry Approved

An amalgamation of two maintained post-primary schools in rural south L'Derry has been approved.

The amalgamation of St Mary's College, Clady and St Paul's College, Kilrea will take effect upon or before the completion of a new building.

Education Minister John O'Dowd said: "This proposal will consolidate post-primary provision in south Derry, creating one sustainable school capable of meeting the educational needs, aptitudes, interests and aspirations of pupils in the area up to GCSE and post-16. The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools as the managing authority will implement the amalgamation upon completion of the new school building or sooner if possible."

Prison Service Pay Settlement Agreed

The Ulster Unionist Party's Finance spokesperson, Leslie Cree MLA, has welcomed the news that the Northern Ireland Prison Service pay settlement has now been approved.

Mr Cree, said: "I very much welcome this given that as a society we ask our Prison Officers to do a difficult and very often dangerous job. It is only right that we as a society give them our full support and ensure that their pay awards are met in full."

Minister agrees amalgamation of two schools
Education Minister, Maria Eagle, has today announced that she has agreed a proposal for the amalgamation of St James Primary School in Tandragee with St Joseph’s Primary School in Poyntzpass. Only 13 pupils currently attend St James’ and 91 pupils attend St Joseph’s.

Holywood schools get amalgamation go-ahead
Education Minister Barry Gardiner has approved a development proposal to amalgamate two primary schools in Holywood, Co Down. The two existing primary schools – Holywood and Redburn – will amalgamate into a new co-educational primary school to be built on the site currently occupied by Priory College.

All schools in Northern Ireland are now Eco-Schools, the Environment Minister has confirmed. Minister Mark H Durkan was speaking at the Eco-Schools National Operators Meeting (NOM), an annual global conference, coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

All NI Post-Primary Schools To Get Minecraft
