Union Calls For Taskforce To Be Established To Save Flowserve Jobs
Unite the union is calling for a taskforce to be setup to save jobs and deal with proposed job losses in the wake of this week’s announcement by Newark based pump manufacturer, Flowserve to cut 180 jobs.
The news came out of the 'blue' for workers who thought they had a secure future after recently celebrating £3.9m refurbishments at the facility.
Following a meeting of Unite reps, the union is calling for a taskforce made up of Unite, local politicians and government agencies to be set up, to save jobs, attract investment and provide funding for training for workers who face losing their jobs.
Unite regional officer, Tony Tinley said: "This site has been here since 1901 providing secure manufacturing jobs for the people of Newark. This decision not only impacts on the 180 direct jobs but many more in the supply chain.
"This decision is difficult to understand as the company spent £3.9m refurbishing the facilities only two years ago. It is the type of modern manufacturing plant that this government says it wants to see grow in the UK. What our members want to see now is government action behind these words and support to save as many jobs possible."
