PSNI and USPCA join forces in day-long 'big cat' hunt

The PSNI and USPCA have joined forces today in a bid to capture an elusive 'big cat' which has been stalking the north coast of Northern Ireland for over a month.

Around 20 sightings of the animal, thought to be the size of a puma or mountain lion, have been made since August, however efforts to capture the beast have proved fruitless.

Today saw a day-long operation swing into action in which a helicopter and police air support unit, as well as police marksmen and USPCA officers, began searching the Portrush, Bushmills and Ballycastle areas of the north coast.

PSNI wildlife liaison officer Mark Mason called on the public to help in the hunt and said asked for residents in the area to carry mobile phones and report sightings to police as soon as possible.

Anyone catching sight of the cat is asked to ring police at Coleraine on 028 7034 4122.
