University Of Ulster To Appeal Planning Decision
The University of Ulster is planning to appeal the decision to prevent it from building homes on the site of its Jordanstown Campus.
In August, the council rejected the planning application to develop 600 homes.
Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell said the action is regrettable and it was turned down on its merits.
Councillor Campbell said: "Throughout this process the university failed to meaningfully consult with the local community, with its only consultation evening at which these plans were on show for local residents widely criticised because of its lack of advertising.
"Leaving aside these criticisms of a failure to engage with the local community which dogged the application throughout, it was rejected in part because of its scale and density and lack of sympathy or regard for the local area in which it was placed.
"There is huge local opposition to these plans and previous efforts to get across to the University that the scale of the plans was unacceptable continually fell on deaf ears."

Minister Publishes Tougher Planning Guidelines
Tougher planning rules on sustainable residential development in urban areas have been announced by the Irish Minister for the Environment, John Gormley. The proposed planning guidelines will force developers and local authorities to build better quality homes in developments with abundant green spaces, close to shops and schools.

Ulster University Planning Application Rejected
The Ulster University has said it is "deeply disappointed" after council planners rejected an application for a mixed use scheme at its Jordonstown campus. The scheme included 600 homes to be developed as well as a research and development park.

Boost For Solar Energy Welcomed
Alliance South Down spokesperson, Councillor Patrick Clarke, has welcomed the announcement by the Environment Minister that schools, businesses and farm buildings will no longer need planning permission for solar panels. The change relates to micro generation equipment, including solar panels, which generate electricity or heat from sunlight.
