SF Hits Out At UUP Over Marriage Equality
Sinn Féin has hit out at UUP leader Mike Nesbitt over his "bizarre and contradictory" position on marriage equality.
Mr Nesbitt confirmed that he will continue to oppose marriage equality at his party's annual conference.
However, Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon accused Mr Nesbitt of saying one thing and doing another.
She said: "On Saturday in the glare of the media he indicated that the UUP in opposing marriage equality would be on the wrong side of history, but this morning states that he will vote against equality.
"Mike Nesbitt is aware of the inequality, discrimination and intolerance that the LGBT community faces, he is aware of the staggering rate of those from the LGBT community who have contemplated suicide. Yet he as leader of the UUP will oppose equality. He is on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of the argument and failing all in the LGBT community.
"He plays to the gallery but when it comes to time to act for the good off all reverts to what is best for the UUP."
