Majority Of NI Population 'Support Same-Sex Marriage' – Survey
A new survey has revealed that almost two-thirds of people in Northern Ireland are "comfortable with same-sex marriage".
The study, jointly commissioned by BBC Northern Ireland and RTÉ, included about 2,000 people – both in NI and the Republic of Ireland – who were asked about a number of issues, including abortion, same-sex marriage, and national identity.
Carried out by polling company B&A, the research found that in Northern Ireland, 64% said they would feel very, or fairly comfortable, if a member of their family married someone of the same gender, while 23% indicated they would feel very, or fairly, uncomfortable.
In the Republic of Ireland, 67% said they would feel comfortable, while 21% said they would be uncomfortable.
The findings have been revealed following a vote in the NI Assembly on Monday regarding same-sex marriage. For the first time, a majority of MLAs voted in favour of changing the laws, to make gay marriage legal, but the motion was blocked by the DUP which tabled a petition of concern.
Northern Ireland is currently the only region in the UK where same-sex marriage is against the law. Last week, same sex-marriage officially became lawful in the Irish Republic, following a referendum in May.
Pipelaying Complete On Ballydougan To Newry Trunk Main Scheme
Pipelaying work on NI Water's Ballydougan to Newry Trunk Main Scheme has been completed.
Just over 5km of new large diameter water main has been installed to link pumping stations in the wider Newry area with the new reservoir at Crieve.
The latest £6 million NI Water investment forms the third phase of the Ballydougan to Newry Trunk Main Scheme.
Other work being undertaken by NI Water as part of the current package of improvements includes extensive refurbishments at Carnbane Pumping Station, which are almost complete, and a new pumping station at Cullyhanna which has just recently got underway. Chlorination and control equipment at a number of other NI Water sites including Camlough Water Treatment Works, Newry West Service Reservoir, located off the Camlough Road and Camly Service Reservoir located south of Newtownhamilton, are also being upgraded.
Concerns Raised Over Dundalk Death
Louth TD Gerry Adams has written to the Health Minister seeking answers to a series of questions regarding the tragic death of Dualtagh Donnelly on Monday 26 October.
Mr Adams said: "I firstly want to express my sincere sympathy to Lindzie, Fionn, Caragh, Oonagh and all of Dualtagh's family at this terrible time. I visited Dualtagh’s wake last week and saw first-hand the devastating impact his death is having on his loved ones.
"I have written to the Health Minister today seeking answers to serious questions concerning the time lapse between the 999 phonecall being logged and an ambulance arriving at the scene.
"I am also concerned to know where the ambulance was dispatched from, why it did not arrive until 39 minutes after the initial emergency phone call and whether there were available ambulances and sufficient medical personnel in Dundalk on the night Dualtagh died?"
