Police checks to reinforce tyre safety message
Defective and badly worn tyres will be the focus of a major road safety awareness campaign being mounted by the tyre industry in Northern Ireland this month.
The Northern Ireland Tyre Safety Week is being organised in association with the PSNI who will be running tyre checks during October with the help of experts from the Tyre Industry Council - the UK's foremost tyre safety organisation.
Motorists found to have a defective tyre - having a tread depth below 1.6mm - could face a £2,500 fine and three penalty points.
The message of the campaign, which is being endorsed by all major tyre companies and tyre retailers in Northern Ireland, is that tyres are a vital safety component - in fact, the only contact with the road surface – often neglected and badly treated and only occasionally checked.
In tyre checks undertaken by the police in Northern Ireland last year some 6% of cars and vans had at least one defective tyre - a further 12% had a badly worn tyre, defined as being below 2mm. One finding from the survey, of particular concern, was that 85% of motorists asked did not know the tyre law.
The Northern Ireland Tyre Safety Campaign will be officially launched next Monday while police roadside tyre checks will start on the 20th October.

North-South Fire Safety Week launched
A joint north-south Fire Safety Week has been launched today by the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade and the Republic of Ireland’s National Safety Council. ‘Fire, Our Community at Risk’ aims to raise public awareness of fire safety issues, and in particular, the higher risk to the very young and elderly people living alone.

Transport Firm Fined Over Fitter's Death
The tragic death of a worker in Co Antrim was recalled in court this week as the firm involved faced action from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI). Montgomery Transport Ltd. was fined a total of £75,000 after pleading guilty at Belfast Crown Court to two breaches of health and safety legislation.

PSNI release 'Winter Safety Leaflet'
The Police Service of Northern Ireland are marking the approach of winter with a straightforward message for drivers - a few simple safety measures could save your life. A leaflet, highlighting such measures, has been launched today in a bid to help save the lives of road users as well as coinciding with the beginning of national Tyre Safety Week.

New £33m Remediation Fund Announced For Unsafe Cladding
The Department for Communities has announced a new £33 million fund for the remediation or mitigation of the life safety fire risks linked to external wall systems in residential buildings in Northern Ireland. The fund applies to residential buildings which are over 11 metres tall.
