39 Jobs At Homebase In Omagh 'At Risk'

39 jobs at a Homebase Store in Omagh, Co Tyrone, are at risk.

Concerns have been raised over the proposed closure of the store and SDLP West Tyrone representative Daniel McCrossan said it will come as a "devastating blow" for workers.

Mr McCrossan said: "Questions must be asked when despite its longtime place in Omagh, despite the £250,000 profit turned over last year and despite the fact that the Omagh site is among the top 5 Homebase stores in Ireland, the management still sees fit to propose its closure.

"It was stated in the letter received by staff that this closure remains a proposal and that negotiations continue around replacing the site with a budget sales outlet but this will not guarantee those left redundant future employment. It would add to the latest in a long line of high-profile job losses across the North that are yet to receive any decisive attention or action from the Enterprise Trade and Investment Minister.

"The management must make every effort to retain this profitable site. They must demonstrate that their decision has not yet been made, that they are open to changing their minds and that they have the welfare of the staff as a priority in any decision that is made."

Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff said: "News that 39 jobs could be lost in Omagh with the potential closure of the Homebase DIY store have caused a great deal of concern in the town.

"The loss of these jobs would be a significant blow to the Omagh area and the local economy.

"No worker wants to receive news like this but particularly not at this time of year."
