Planning Permission Approved To Develop Fourth Hotel In Belfast
Planning permission has been approved to develop a fourth hotel in Belfast city centre.
The development, by Cathedral Leisure Ltd, involves the conversion of an office block on the corner of Victoria Street and Ann Street to a 58-bedroom hotel, with associated bar and restaurant. The application also involves the addition of an extra storey to the building, to provide another ten bedrooms.
The application was approved by the Belfast City Council Planning Committee.
The Chair, Councillor Matt Garrett, said: "The fact that we have been able to grant planning permission for four major new hotels in as many months is a clear demonstration of how this Council is committed to working for the benefit of the city, and to ensuring that proposals such as these are moved forward as quickly and efficiently as possible.
"When planning powers transferred to the Council in April, we inherited a legacy of more than 700 outstanding applications. Since then, we have issued around 100 decisions a month, which shows that we have very much hit the ground running in terms of not only clearing this backlog of legacy applications but also in processing new applications."

Belfast City Council has announced it's intention to reform Planning Services, with a renewed focus on how it communicates with various customer groups. The announcement follows recommendations in a report it commissioned by Scotland's former Chief Planner, Jim Mackinnon CBE and broad consultation with a number of stakeholder groups.

Plans to develop a 'boutique travel hotel' in Belfast city centre's Bank Square have been approved. Belfast City Council's Planning Committiee gave the go-ahead for a four-storey hotel with 17 bedrooms and a ground floor restaurant to be built beside the Mourne Seafood Bar and Kelly's Cellars.

Pilot planning service scheme to speed up process
The DOE Planning Service has announced a further move to speed up the planning process, with the start of a pilot scheme to return all invalid planning applications. From 14 March, the Belfast Divisional Planning Office will return incomplete planning applications, together with the planning fee and an explanation of the reasons for return.
