New Scheme Aims To Improve Broadband In Remote Areas
A new scheme to improve broadband speeds in remote areas of Northern Ireland has been announced by Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Jonathan Bell.
The Satellite Broadband Support Scheme, a UK-wide initiative, will allow homes and businesses to get a subsidised satellite broadband connection if they are currently unable to obtain a broadband service of at least 2mbps.
Jonathan Bell said: "I recognise poor broadband is an issue for people and businesses in rural areas and I am pleased to launch this scheme which will help those with the slowest connections by providing an immediate boost to their available speeds.
"The scheme, administered by my Department, will provide a code to eligible homes and businesses upon request. They can then use the code with one of a selected number of retail service providers to obtain a subsidised satellite broadband service, including in most cases, a free satellite dish and installation, saving people up to £350."
New Protocal Established For Fish Kills
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has announced a new protocol for dealing with fish kills in NI waterways.
The new protocol includes:
• A standard methodology for the investigation of fish kills
• Detailed guidance on where to sample in the case of an ongoing kill
• The incident will be overviewed by a senior member of NIEA staff to ensure sufficient resources are allocated to the investigation, and
• Involvement of local angling clubs and stakeholders in the investigation.
Mark H Durkan said: "I have met with a number of Angler's Associations and listened to their concerns. I promised them that we would produce a protocol for dealing with fish kills. Partnership with them when investigating fish kills is at the heart of that.
"With ever diminishing resources I also welcome the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers willing to give up their time to protect our environment in this way. We are all interested in better water quality and by working together we can ensure we target our efforts at those who pollute our waters."
Yellow Warning For Rain Issued
A yellow warning for rain has been issued in counties Armagh and Down, with heavy rainfall expected overnight.
The Met Office has said that outbreaks of rain will become persistent and heavy overnight and into the early part of Friday morning. With ground conditions becoming more saturated again, there is a risk of localised flooding.
Drivers are warned to be aware of some difficult driving conditions due to standing water and spray.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.

The Alliance Party has raised concerns over the rate of progress on the redress scheme for Historical Institutional Abuse of children. The party's Executive Office spokesperson, Paula Bradshaw MLA, has called on the First and deputy First Minister (FMdFM) must meet victims and survivors urgently over memorialisation and other issues.
