GMB Union To Attend First Meeting Of The Steel Council
GMB will attend the first meeting of the Steel Council with government ministers, UK Steel and other representatives and trade unions to stand up for the future of the UK steel industry.
The meeting will look at how to address long-term issues for the steel sector and propose steps to protect the industry.
The meeting comes on the back of 2,200 redundancies from the SSI owned Redcar steelworks, 1,200 Tata redundancies in Scunthorpe and Lanarkshire and over 700 In Port Talbot. Other proposed redundancies in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Wednesbury, Trostre, Corby and Hartlepool have led to over 5,000 jobs lost over the past few months which has devastated communities throughout the UK.
Dave Hulse GMB National Officer said "We are looking for real progress being made with the formulation of this new group. Since the Steel Summit on the 16th October 2015 things have been moving at a very slow pace.
"We have gone from crisis to crisis and really need to see action now otherwise GMB fears for the long term future of the steel industry."

Pensions' Dispute At Tata Steel Ends
The pensions' dispute at Tata Steel that brought the company to the brink of the biggest industrial dispute in 35 years has ended. Members of all four unions at the company have voted to accept changes to the British Steel Pension Scheme which will keep the scheme open.

Planned Strike By Tata Steel Workers Suspended
A planned strike by workers at Tata Steel, including 6,000 from Unite the union, has been suspended after a new offer was made over pensions. Members of Unite, Community, the GMB and Ucatt were due to walk out for 24 hours on today, 22 June, in protest at plans to close their final salary pension scheme.

Steel Unions Set Date For Strike Ballot
Steel unions Community, Unite, GMB and Ucatt have announced that Wednesday 6th May is the date they intend to open an industrial action ballot over Tata Steel's proposal to close the British Steel pension scheme (BSPS). The ballot is expected to end on Friday 29 May.

In rare good news this week, it has emerged that the huge steel manufacturer, Corus is hiring new staff at its two Speciality Steel factories in Yorkshire. Some 154 people are to be recruited, barely a year after the Stocksbridge and Rotherham plants faced closure.
