Peace II funding tops 100 million euro mark
One hundred million euro of Peace II funds have now been spent in Northern Ireland and the Border Region, the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) revealed today.
The SEUPB is the organisation that oversees the programme and monitors the funds.
Shaun Henry, Director of the Peace II Programme, said: "This is very encouraging news. Getting money on the ground, actually working in the community, that is what the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation is about.
“We have found that, over the past few months, the number of projects beginning their work has accelerated as has the amount of Peace II money being spent on schemes. We now have over 2,500 projects and we expect this to increase sharply over the coming months."
Mr Henry said that the simplification of the application process, the introduction of a small grants form for projects up to £10,000 and the easing of monitoring regulations, all steps that have been taken recently, have made the Peace II Programme more accessible and have led to more applications.
“We are pleased that our work and the work of all the organisations involved in delivering the programme is paying off with high-quality projects delivering schemes that contribute to promoting a more stable and prosperous society," he added.
The Peace II Programme will continue to commit monies to projects in Northern Ireland until the end of 2004.

Peace Centre Funding Withdrawn
European Union funding of £18m for the peace centre at the former Maze prison has been withdrawn, after parties were unable to agree on the details surrounding the development. The Special European Programmes Body said it had removed the financial support after consulting with the Office of the First and deputy First Minister.
