Around One In Five People Living In Poverty In NI
Around one in five people are living in poverty in Northern Ireland, according to a new report.
The report, by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) revealed 360,000 people were living in poverty due to significantly lower employment.
Northern Ireland has not experienced the same strong employment performance as Great Britain (GB), only now reaching pre-recession levels. Since 2011, the working-age employment rate has reached 68 per cent, where employment is at a 73 per cent in GB.
Average pay in Northern Ireland at the bottom and in the middle is lower than a decade ago by around £20 a week.
Helen Barnard, head of analysis at JRF, said: "Poverty is a problem that can be solved, but the foundations to reduce poverty in Northern Ireland – more jobs and good levels of pay – appear to be much weaker in comparison to the rest of the United Kingdom. To ensure work provides a route out of poverty and improve the life chances of the next generation, we need the next administration to adopt a comprehensive plan to address poverty for all ages, so people in Northern Ireland can play in their part in a prosperous, poverty-free society."

Yesterday, the Stormont Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland (pictured) welcomed the publication of a report by the University of Ulster entitled 'Defining Fuel Poverty in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Review'.

Child poverty in Northern Ireland continues to increase, according to a report entitled 'Households Below Average Income, Northern Ireland, 2011/12' released today. The amount of children living in poverty increased between 2010-11 and 2011-12, the report found.

According to the report ‘Bare Necessities - Poverty And Social Exclusion In Northern Ireland’ a higher proportion of families are living in poverty in Northern Ireland than in either Britain or the Republic of Ireland.
