60 New Specialist Cancer Nursing And Support Worker Jobs To Be Created
Around 60 specialist cancer nursing and support worker jobs are to created over the next five years following an investment of £11.5 million, the Health Minister has confirmed.
Minister Simon Hamilton confirmed the posts will be funded by the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB), in partnership with two charities. The HSCB will invest £2.4m, Macmillan Cancer Support will provide a £7m investment and Friends of the Cancer Centre have pledged a further £2.1m.
Minister Hamilton said: "More cancer specialist nurses are needed in Northern Ireland, and this significant investment will create around 60 new posts which is excellent news for local patients.
"Clinical nurse specialists work at the front line of cancer care, providing patient with support during and after treatment. They are the main point of contact for patients and their families, play a vital role in the coordination of care, and ensure that patients receive the holistic support they need to meet their clinical and emotional needs. They are greatly valued by patients and this investment will benefit patients directly with more nurses on the ground."

Northern Ireland's hospitals have failed to meet target times for the treatment of patients referred for suspected cancer, a new report by the Department of Health revealed. Its guidelines say 95% of patients should begin their treatment within 62 days. Last December however, the figure stood at 81%, which was the third monthly fall in a row.

14 Cancer Charities Receive Grant Funding Totalling £7.95m
Fourteen cancer charities have received grant funding totalling £7.95 million, Health Minister Robin Swann has announced. The payments have been made through the Cancer Charities Support Fund, part of a £24m package of funding made available in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support carers, cancer charities and mental health organisations.

Over 88% Of Cancer Patients Begin Treatment Within 31 Days
Over 88% of people diagnosed with cancer began treatment within the 31 day target in the four months to September 2022, up from 86% in the previous four months. The Department of Health today published the Northern Ireland Cancer Waiting Times Statistics Release for the quarter ending September 2022.
