Fire At Flat In East Belfast Being Treated As Arson

Police are treating a fire at a flat in east Belfast as arson.

The incident happened at a property in the Albertbridge Road area between 2pm and 2.45pm on Monday.

The residents were not in the flat at the time, however other flats in the block were occupied which could have led to "serious consequences", according to the police.

A large amount of damage was caused to the flat and to the adjacent flats as a result of the fire.

Detective Inspector Snoddy said: "I would ask anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspicious in the area of the flat on Albertbridge Road around 2pm yesterday or who knows anything about this incident to contact detectives at Musgrave Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Elsewhere, a fire at a primary school in L'Derry is believed to have been started deliberately.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) was alerted to the blaze at Holy Child Primary School after 9pm on Monday.

The fire is believed to have been started on the roof.

The NIFRS extinguished the blaze however in a statement the school said the damage was limited and plans to open on Tuesday morning.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
