Intel Begins Process Of Laying Off Staff - Reports
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs, Dara Calleary, has said reports that Intel has started the process of laying off staff at their Leixlip plant in Co Kildare will come as a 'devastating blow' to the local and regional economy.
Reports suggest that managers have begun informing employees about the company's redundancy plans, with suggestions that up to 400 workers may lose their jobs across Intel's facilities at Leixlip, Shannon and Cork.
Deputy Calleary commented: "My first thoughts are with the staff at Intel and their families. Despite the fact that the majority of the redundancies are likely to be voluntary, it is an extremely anxious and uncertain time for Intel employees.
"The initial shock for the workers will quickly turn to concern for their future. The Government and state agencies such as the IDA need to do everything they can to respond quickly and comprehensively.
"It is imperative that a taskforce is established to engage with the affected workers and their representatives to ensure that they are offered upskilling and retraining opportunities so that they can find alternative employment.
"We need to fully draw down all the resources available, including the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund, to ensure that Intel workers are fully supported in transitioning to new career opportunities.
"Intel has been a major employer in Ireland, and more specifically in Leixlip, for more than three decades, providing a major economic boost to the Kildare region and it is essential that this high value industry is protected."
