IRA confirms third act of decommissioning

The IRA looks set to decommission more of its weapons after it confirmed it had "authorised a further act of putting arms beyond use".

In a statement released shortly after news of assembly elections was announced, the republican group said it had done so as "verified under the agreed scheme" with Northern Ireland decommissioning head General John de Chastelain.

Although the exact quantity of weapons disposed off was not revealed by General de Chastelain on Tuesday afternoon, the Decommissioning chief described the amount as "considerably larger than the previous event".

The IRA statement signed by "P. O'Neill" said the weapons issue was something the group was "committed" to resolving.

"In line with our stated position, we have authorised our representative to meet with the IICD with a view to proceeding with the implementation of a process to put arms beyond use at the earliest opportunity," it added.
