Unions suspend Friday's bus strike

A strike by Northern Ireland's bus drivers scheduled to take place tomorrow has been averted, it was announced today.

Talks between workers the unions, GMB and TGWU, and management at Translink on Thursday resulted in strike action being suspended pending further negotiations.

Union representatives had previously rejected a 4.7% pay increase offered by Translink as inadequate, claiming that current wage levels are 17% below the average manual worker's wage at present.

Local bus drivers currently earn a wage of around £13,500 per annum which is supplemented with overtime of about £5,000 a year.

More than 1,700 bus drivers took part in last weeks strike with 300 Translink routes affected. A last-minute High Court injunction sought by Translink to prevent the industrial action from going ahead was rejected late on Thursday.

The resulting strike action left nearly 250,000 passengers stranded last Friday. Further strikes are still planned for 31 October and 7 and 10 November.
