Alliance Pays Tribute To Lord Mayhew
Alliance Leader David Ford has paid tribute to former Northern Ireland Secretary of State Lord Mayhew, who has passed away aged 86.
Lord Mayhew was the longest-serving Secretary of State, representing the Conservative Government from 1992 - 1997.
Mr Ford said: "Lord Mayhew served as Secretary of State in difficult times.
"He played a key role in John Major's cabinet and also served as Attorney General. It was during his time as Secretary of State that talks began which eventually led to the Good Friday Agreement.
"Lady Mayhew also worked alongside her husband to support groups working to promote reconciliation. No-one can deny the commitment they both showed to seeking peace in Northern Ireland. The transformation to a peaceful society will remain a large part of Patrick Mayhew's political legacy."
