Derry Airport expansion angers residents
Around 17 houses are set to be demolished in Londonderry after the city's Council ratified plans to allow the extension of a runway at Derry Airport.
Residents of Donnybrewar Road in Eglinton said they plan to challenge the verdict after they claimed they were not consulted during the decision making process.
Mayor of Derry, Cllr Shaun Gallagher said he understood resident concerns but reiterated the benefits such a move would bring.
“From the residents view this is not a popular decision but they must be reassured that all options were considered with expert advice and that the Council’s decision was the only alternative to support the expansion of the airport and the development of the region," he said.
"At present, a conservative estimate indicates that the airport brings £12m into the local economy. Through the proposed development we hope to increase this contribution and bring more business and leisure travel into the region. The investment will create jobs and improve the competitiveness of the region."
As well as a runway extension, west of the existing runway, proposals also include investment in terminal, car parking and ancillary services.

Orange Order Agrees To Nationalist Talks
The Orange Order has agreed to engage in talks with a nationalist residents group in north Belfast, following an appeal by a unionist residents group. The Twaddell and Woodvale Residents Association asked local Orange lodges to speak to the Crumlin and Ardoyne Residents Association to find a way to help the 12th of July parades pass off peacefully.

Airport's Extra Passenger Bid Slammed
Residents have reacted angrily to reports that George Best Belfast City Airport is trying to get a cap on its passenger numbers lifted. A spokeswoman said this week that the airport's management has written to the Stormont Environment Minister, Edwin Poots, to request that the current limit of two million 'seats for sale' be removed.
