Operation Journal road checks hit law breakers
Around 500 vehicles were stopped during an hour long multi-agency vehicle checkpoint (VCP) in Belfast yesterday.
Under the auspices of the Organised Crime Task Force, the operation, codenamed 'Operation Journal', was set up to detect use of illegal fuel and other infringements by road users.
During the Customs and Excise led operation two vehicles out of 30 tested were shown positive for illegal fuel, while an additional two are subject to further investigations.
Driver Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland clamped three vehicles for road tax evasion while the Driver Vehicle Testing Agency detected five vehicles with excess weight.
They also removed one vehicle from the road as it was not roadworthy and issued two additional warnings to drivers with vehicle defects.
The PSNI, meawhile, issued 16 fixed penalty notices, 10 of which were for failure to comply with the seatbelt laws and six for vehicle defects. Eight additional cases are subject to further investigations.
Monday's operation coincided with an advertising campaign which recognises the specific oils fraud problem faced by the authorities in Northern Ireland.
