SDLP face 'serious challenge' from Sinn Fein
Launching its campaign for the November 26 election, SDLP leader Mark Durkan has said that the party faces a "serious challenge" from Sinn Fein.
Mr Durkan, who said that the balance of power in a number of constituencies could easily be decided by a handful of votes, said: "We know we are in a fight for this election."
The SDLP's track record at the 1998 Assembly elections saw them emerged as the most popular nationalist party, but in the 2001 elections for Westminster seats the party was eclipsed by Sinn Fein who secured more seats.
Gerry Conlon, one of the Guildford Four, has endorsed the SDLP Assembly election campaign and will appear in the party's election broadcasts.
Mr Conlon, who was one of four people wrongly arrested for the Guildford and Woolwich pub bombings in 1974, said that he wished to support the party with his endorsement as the party had supported him during his ordeal.
Mr Durkan said that Mr Conlon's support was in recognition of the party's campaign to highlight the miscarriage of justice.

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.
