Funeral Of Dr Edward Daly To Be Held Today

The funeral of Edward Daly is due to be held later today, 11 August.

The former Bishop of Derry died in hospital on Monday, 08 August, following a period of illness. He was 82-years-old.

The service will take place this afternoon at St Eugene's Cathedral in L'Derry.

Dr Daly was famously photographed during Bloody Sunday, as he waved a white, blood-stained, handkerchief while trying to assist people shot by British paratroopers.

He later became a key witness at Lord Widgery's enquiry into the events of 30 January, 1972.

Dr Daly retired as Bishop in 1993 after suffering a stroke but continued in his role as chaplain at Foyle's Hospital until February this year.

The service will begin today at 3.30pm. Dr Daly will be buried on the grounds of the Cathedral.

Those wishing to attend the service are welcome to arrive from 2.30pm, but have been asked to park away from the Cathedral as space is expected to be extremely limited.
