Pan-disability gymnastics puts sport in international spotlight
The development of worldwide disability sport takes a major stride forward this weekend, when Belfast hosts the second international pan-disability gymnastics.
The competition, sponsored by Belfast City Council through its ‘Support For Sport’ programme, is being held at Maysfield Leisure Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
This is the second successive year that the competition, the only one of its kind for gymnasts with disabilities, has been held in Belfast.
The competition is the centrepiece of a weekend of activities, which also sees the Hilton Hotel hosting an international symposium on the development of gymnastics for disabled people.
The symposium has attracted delegates from nine different countries, as well as some of the most senior figures from the world of gymnastics, including Norbert Beuche, Secretary-General of the FIG; Brian Stocks, President of British Gymnastics; and Margaret Sikkens, President of the FIG’s General Gymnastics Technical Committee.
This weekend’s competition will see Britain’s top gymnasts in action, with three times British champions James Weetman and Laura Bateman leading the field of competitors from the home countries as well as the Republic of Guinea, Slovakia and Uganda. Local representation comes from the Dunmurry-based Salto Gymnastics Club.
In addition to providing the venue for the weekend competition, Belfast City Council also will be hosting a reception for all the competitors and symposium delegates, at the City Hall on Saturday evening.
