NIFRS Issues Reminder At Chimney Fire Safety Week
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has issued a reminder to householders that chimney fires can be easily prevented by getting their chimneys cleaned.
The NIFRS made the call at the launch of Chimney Fire Safety Week, 05 - 11 September.
Firefighters attended 1,100 chimney fires across Northern Ireland in 2015.
Geoff Somerville, Assistant Group Commander, NIFRS said: "There has been a 17% reduction in the number of chimney fires we attended in 2015 in comparison to 2014. Attending chimney fires represented 5.1% of all incidents we attended last year.
"We are reminding householders that chimney fires can be easily prevented by getting chimneys swept, a number of times a year depending on the type of chimney and fuel you use, to ensure that they are safe and clean for use."
"The cost of a chimney sweep is very small when compared to dealing with the damage and cost of repair after a chimney fire, not to mention the potential threat to life if the chimney fire were to spread to the rest of the property.
"Please also ensure that you have working smoke alarms in your home and test them once a week. If you think you have a chimney fire call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire & Rescue Service."

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is reminding the public of the dangers of chimney fires, after it attended 1,762 such fires last year, representing just over 7% of all incidents in 2013. Chimney Fire Safety Week begins today, and the NIFRS is reminding the public to ensure chimneys are swept and cleaned regularly.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.
