Councillor issues warning following knife attack

A Portrush councillor has issued a warning to young people following a knife attack in the Co Antrim town at the weekend.

Ulster Unionist Assembly candidate Norman Hillis described an attack on a woman during a robbery on Saturday night as disgraceful.

The woman required 10 staples to a shoulder wound after being slashed with a knife after a man attempted to steal her handbag as she walked along Kerr Street at around 8.30pm.

“This type of incident is rare but nevertheless I would urge young people, particularly young woman, to be safety conscious at night, particularly at weekends," said Mr Hillis.

“It is disgraceful that anyone should walk around the town with a knife intent on robbing innocent people. Thankfully the victim was not seriously injured but it could so easily have been a different story.

“I would encourage anyone who saw the incident to give the police the information they have. In doing so we can fight back against the men of evil in our society and hopefully bring them before the courts," he added.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the attack to come forward.

The robber is believed to have run off with another youth towards Station Square following the incident.
