Teachers To Take Strike Action In November
The largest teachers' union in Northern Ireland is to take a rolling programme of strike action which is to begin at the end of November 2016.
The NASUWT raised serious concerns over teachers pay, work load and job losses.
Chris Keates, NASUWT General Secretary, said: "The final straw, adding insult to injury, is that after months of so-called negotiations, the employers have belatedly put zero per cent on the table for teachers for 2015-16.
"Teachers' pay in Northern Ireland is now not only failing to keep pace with trends in the graduate labour market, it is also failing to keep up with teachers across the UK, who have at least had the one per cent funded by the Treasury.
"It is disgraceful that the employers and the Department of Education, rather than paying teachers, are simply banking the one per cent from the Treasury.
"The NASUWT is putting employers on notice that unless they come forward with a pay award for 2015-16, and unless the Department of Education agrees to genuine engagement to seek to resolve the NASUWT’s trade dispute, they will be responsible for forcing the dedicated and committed teachers of Northern Ireland to demonstrate their anger and frustration through strike action."

The offer continues the year-on-year cuts to teachers' pay. The NASUWT is calling for an across the board above inflation cost of living award.

NI Tops UK Worries Poll For Money And Families
People in the Northern Ireland are more concerned about money than anywhere else in the country according to Samaritans' annual worries survey 2012. An exclusive YouGov poll for Samaritans shows that 66 per cent of Northern Irish people placed worries about money in their top five, and 17 per cent above the UK average.

MLA's call for new firefighters pay scheme
Two UUP MLA's have called on the Northern Ireland Executive to implement a new pay scheme for Ulster's firefighters. North Antrim UUP MLA the Rev Robert Coulter called for the introduction of a new pay formula in a motion to the Assembly on Monday. Mr Coulter said he hoped it would help achieve a real remedy to the question of firefighter’s pay.

Fears over an apparent lack of job opportunities for newly qualified teachers have been in focus this week. It has been claimed that as many as 95% of new teachers are unable to secure full time jobs. That's according to a DUP MLA who underlined the claim when MLAs debated the concerns over the number of new teachers at Stormont.
