Prisoner Dies At Maghaberry
A prisoner has died while in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has confirmed.
It is understood the man died on the evening of Saturday, 05 November.
Next of kin for the man, aged 44, have been informed.
The PSNI, coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have all launched investigations into the death.
Phil Wragg, Acting Prison Service Director General, said: "I would like to extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the prisoner who has died in Maghaberry. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
Declan Kearney, Sinn Féin MLA, said: "I am deeply concerned to learn about the death of a prisoner in Maghaberry prison. I will be contacting prison service authorities to obtain a full report on the circumstances surrounding this man's death in custody.
"My sympathies and thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

Man Charged After Glenarm Shooting

Prison Response To Collapsed Inmate 'Inadequate' - Ombudsman
The Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has described as "inadequate" the response by staff at Maghaberry Prison to a prisoner who collapsed in his cell and subsequently died. 46-year-old David Brown died from a brain haemorrhage at an outside hospital on 15 December 2012, while in the custody of Maghaberry Prison.

Justice Minister, Naomi Long, has announced an increase in the number of Prison staff in response to Northern Ireland's rising prisoner population. Since July 2021 the prison population has increased by over 500 prisoners and now stands at 1,920.

A 53-year-old has reportedly died in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has announced. The Department of Justice has reported that the prisoner died on Saturday 28 August, that his next of kin have been informed and that the death was not covid related.
