Boost for biodiversity and conservation biology research

Researchers in the fields of biodiversity and conservation biology were given a boost last night after a new centre was officially opened at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).

The centre, called QUERCUS, the generic name of the oak tree, and symbolises the research ethos of the centre, reflects the university name and represents the strength of partnership with DOE Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) and Queens University Belfast.

QUB was awarded the contract to carry out biodiversity and conservation biology research for EHS after an open Europe-wide tendering competition.

QUERCUS will provide expert research and advice for EHS in the field of biodiversity and conservation biology and will link the outputs to Government responsibilities for biodiversity and nature conservation.

The principle aim of QUERCUS is to promote, publish and publicise high quality research in biodiversity and conservation biology; to establish and sustain innovative programmes of biological monitoring appropriate to the longer term ecological studies required to establish environmental change and its causes, and to underpin habitat and species management.

A commemorative plaque was also unveiled by Richard Rogers, Chief Executive of the Environment & Heritage Service.
