Secretary of State urges NI public to exercise vote
Everyone should play their part and exercise their democratic right to vote in the forthcoming Assembly Elections.
This was the message from Secretary of State, Paul Murphy during a visit to the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland Headquarters in Belfast today.
Preaching the importance of this year's election Mr Murphy said it was imperative that everyone entitled to vote should do so "to make full use of their democratic mandate".
"The future of Northern Ireland will be shaped by the electorate," Mr Murphy said. "While no-one underestimates the political difficulties that exist, everyone can use their vote to move things forward.
"I would encourage people to be positive and contribute to the future by making the effort to turn out and vote."
Praising the work of the Chief Electoral Officer, Denis Stanley and his staff the Secretary of State added "The Electoral Office play a vital role in ensuring that democracy is effective here in Northern Ireland.
"During my visit today I have spoken with staff who are working tirelessly in preparation for the election. I commend the dedication and commitment of Denis Stanley and his whole team as they strive to ensure that everything is in place for a successfully administered election on 26th November."
In the 1998 Assembly elections, the average turnout among Northern Ireland's 18 constituencies was 68.77%.
