RHI Scheme: Belfast City Council Passes Motion For Full Public Inquiry

Belfast City council has passed a motion for a full public inquiry into the controversial Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

Independent unionist councillor Ruth Patterson proposed the motion. A total of 23 councillors voted in favour and 12 voted against.

The motion also called for the council to write to First Minister Arlene Foster urging her to step aside pending an inquiry.

The scheme, which was established by Mrs Foster, is set to run almost £500 million over budget.

Alliance Councillor Naomi Long wrote to the British Government calling for a public inquiry into the scheme, however it was rejected.

A Government spokesperson said: "The operation of the RHI scheme is a matter for the NI Executive. So it is right for the Executive and the Assembly to decide the form of any investigation or inquiry."
