Motion Calling For Donors Who Make Large Donations To Politicians Passed
An Alliance Party motion calling for the names of single donors who make large donations to politicians in Northern Ireland has been passed by Belfast City Council.
A total of 38 councillors voted in favour and 13 against.
Alliance Councillor Kate Nicholl said increasing openness and transparency in politics can only be a good thing.
She said: "It was disappointing to see the DUP and UUP voting against the motion, which sought to make politics more publicly accountable, and they will have to answer to the public as to why they did just that.
"However, it is vital all parties now follow through with the pledge of this motion. Although Belfast City Council has no statutory powers to compel parties to reveal their donors, all local parties should follow Alliance's example and provide the public with information to help restore confidence in politics across the board."

UUP councillor defects over PUP 'deal'
Ulster Unionist Party councillor, Peter Bowles, is to defect to the Conservative Party in protest over the UUP's decision to continue with their deal with the PUP. Mr Bowles condemned the decision by party leaders to join forces with David Ervine`s Progressive Unionist Party, which has links to loyalist paramilitary group the UVF.

11-plus opponents meet at Stormont
Politicians, teachers and community leaders, have met at Stormont today in a show of solidarity in support of the abolition of the 11-plus Transfer exam. Those attending the meeting included representatives from Sinn Fein, the SDLP, the Alliance Party, teacher associations and the voluntary and community sector.

Ards and North Down Borough Council has became the first district in Northern Ireland to declare a climate emergency, following a motion from Green Party Councillors this week. Councillors Rachel Woods and Barry McKee forwarded the motion on Wednesday 28 February, calling for action from the Northern Ireland Assembly, the UK government and the EU.
