NI Secretary Of State Expected To Set Assembly Election Date
The Northern Ireland Secretary of State is expected to call an Assembly election later today, 16 January, if Sinn Féin fails to nominate a deputy First Minister to replace Martin McGuinness.
Mr McGuinness retired after DUP leader Arlene Foster refused to stand aside as First Minister while an investigation was carried out over the controversial Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, which is set to cost the public purse around £490million.
Mr McGuinness's resignation means Arlene Foster was automatically removed as First Minister.
The DUP is expected to re-nominate Mrs Foster as First Minister later today, however it is believed Sinn Féin will not put forward a replacement.
NI Secretary of State James Brokenshire is expected to announce a date for an Assembly election today.
