Police Officer Shot In North Belfast
A 36-year-old man has been arrested after a police officer was shot in north Belfast.
The attack happened at a petrol station on the Crumlin Road at around 7.30pm on Sunday, 22 January.
The officer sustained two bullet wounds to his arm. He is currently in a stable condition in hospital.
Dissident republicans are being blamed for the attack.
The road remains closed and investigations are ongoing.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton described the shooting as "reckless" and "madness".
He said: "This is the first shooting attack upon police for some time. It is totally unnecessary, appalling and should be condemned by all sides of the community. This was not just an attack upon police, it was very clearly an attack upon the community. Other lives could easily have been lost.
"I can assure the community of North Belfast that every resource we have has been turned to find the people responsible and bring them to justice. I would ask them for their help and support as we conduct our investigation.
"We would like to hear from anyone who noticed an Audi-type vehicle opposite the filling station around 7.30pm or anyone who has information that could help our investigation. You can contact us on 101."
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said: "I hope that the injured officer will make a full and speedy recovery.
"Those responsible for this attack are the same people who are attacking the local community. They have absolutely nothing to offer society and need to call a halt to these activities immediately."
Alliance Leader Naomi Long said: "Whoever was behind this attack on the police officer intended to kill. Using guns in a residential area shows a callous disregard for the entire community and should be condemned without reservation.
"Those involved in planning and carrying out this misguided attack should see the futility of their actions. They go against the democratic principles that the vast majority of people in this society support.
"The police have an important role safeguarding the community and deserve full support in carrying out this role. I offer my thoughts and prayers for the officer's speedy and full recovery."

House of Lords vote for ‘50/50’ police force
The House of Lords has renewed the 50/50 recruitment rule for the PSNI by a majority of 44. It puts into practice a recommendation made in 1999 by Lord Patten that the local police force should be split evenly between Catholics and Protestants. The result of the vote was 141 to 97.

A man has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer in Co L'Derry. A viable under-car bomb was discovered outside a house in the Ardanlee area on 22 February last year. Army bomb disposal experts attended the scene. No-one was injured.
