Sports Safety Conference Announced

A Sports Safety Conference is to be hosted by the Department for Communities to provide an opportunity for experts on a range of safety topics to address those involved in safety across the sports sector.

The Department said that the conference will have particular interest to sports grounds owners and operators, sports governing bodies, sports clubs and those from the emergency services who are involved with managing safety at sports events. 

The free, one-day conference will be held at the Kingspan Stadium on Friday, 24 March.

Presentations will be made by:

• Andy Murphy, Eventsec – The Stewarding Experience

• Dr David McManus, NI Ambulance Service – Medical Emergencies

• Brian McNeill, Systechnica Limited – The Impact of Unmanned Aircraft at Events

• Geoff Wilson, Dundrod & District Motorcycle Club – Managing Safety at an International Motorcycle Road Race

• Professor Clifford Stott, Keele University – Crowd Behaviour

• Superintendent Nigel Goddard, PSNI – Policing at the UEFA 2016​ European Championships.

North-South Fire Safety Week launched
A joint north-south Fire Safety Week has been launched today by the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade and the Republic of Ireland’s National Safety Council. ‘Fire, Our Community at Risk’ aims to raise public awareness of fire safety issues, and in particular, the higher risk to the very young and elderly people living alone.

NIFRS Launches Online Home Fire Safety Check Tool
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has introduced a new online tool to help residents assess their home fire safety. The Home Fire Safety Check coincides with Fire Safety Week, which runs from September 30th to October 6th. The initiative aims to reduce the number of house fires in Northern Ireland.

£400k Funding Announced For Derry GAA
Funding to the tune of £417,491 has been announced for Derry GGA Culb by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland. The funding will be used for a new multipurpose sports changing and meeting space complex to be built at Lowry’s Lane, Glen Road, Londonderry.
