Appeal Launched After 'Dangerous' Prisoner Fails To Return To Jail

Police are appealing for information on the whereabouts of a "dangerous" prisoner who failed to return to Maghaberry Prison in Lisburn.

Michael Lawrence Smith, aged 38, was mistakenly released from jail on Tuesday, 07 March, and has failed to return.

He is currently on remand for murder.

The public are being urged not to approach him and to contact the police immediately.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes said: "I would ask Mr Smith to hand himself in to the authorities without any further delay and ask anyone who knows of his current whereabouts or who has any information to contact police on 999."

A 51-year-old convicted murderer is on the run after he failed to return to Maghaberry Prison following home leave. William Sloan was jailed in 1989 for the murder of 39-year-old James Hamilton.

Police Seek Convicted Murderer Stephen Henry
Police are seeking the whereabouts of a convicted murderer who did not return to Magilligan Prison after a day release. Stephen Henry, 41, was permitted to see his family on Monday, 30 October, however he failed to return. He was last seen in the Craigavon area on Monday at around 3.45pm. Police believe he may be in the Craigavon or Belfast areas.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Police return to McAlorum murder scene
Police have returned to the scene of last week's murder of a Belfast man outside a primary school in south of the City. Kevin McAlorum was shot dead outside Oakwood Integrated Primary School in Derriaghy last Thursday.

Police Ombudsman Issues Appeal Regarding West Belfast Arrest
An appeal for witnesses regarding the arrest of a man in west Belfast has been issued by the Police Ombudsman. The man was arrested by police in the Beechview Park of the Falls Road at approximately 1am on Sunday, October 6.
