NIE Networks Launches New Campaign
NIE Networks has launched a new campaign reminding anglers across Northern Ireland to 'look up and look out' for overhead electricity equipment before they start fishing.
FishSafe 2017 aims to encourage all anglers to put safety first.
Hal Steele, Safety Engineer at NIE Networks, said: "Everyone should look up and look out for overhead electricity power lines before assembling fishing rods and keep at least 30 metres away when fishing. Electricity can jump gaps and even bringing a fishing rod close to overhead electricity equipment is very dangerous. Many fishing rods are very long and contain carbon fibre, which conducts electricity. Contact or near contact with electricity power lines can lead to burns or even fatal injuries.
"We have produced a new FishSafe leaflet this year, which we are distributing to angling clubs across Northern Ireland."
Alliance Pays Tribute to Taoiseach
Alliance Leader Naomi Long has paid tribute to Enda Kenny, who has announced his resignation as Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader.
Mr Kenny will step down as party leader effective from midnight but will continue as acting leader and Taoiseach until a replacement is elected by 02 June.
Mrs Long said: "Enda Kenny will be remembered in Northern Ireland for showing a true commitment to the peace process, as well as helping seek solutions to several crises which took place in his time in office.
"He also displayed a proactive approach to Brexit and realised the damaging impact it will have on everyone on the island, whether north or south, and established a forum to help seek solutions to it.
"Although we might not have always shared the same political views on some issues, I wish him well in his future and thank him for his work as Taoiseach."
Concerns Raised Over DUP's 'Dark Money'
Sinn Féin's Paul Maskey will lead a Sinn Féin delegation to meet the Electoral Commission tomorrow to discuss concerns over the DUP's 'dark money' during the Brexit referendum campaign.
Mr Maskey said: "There are serious public concerns about the £425,000 in 'dark money' the DUP received from a shadowy group during the Brexit referendum campaign.
"The DUP have yet to reveal where this money, paid by the mysterious Constitutional Research Council, actually came from.
"With allegations of involvement of individuals linked to Saudi Arabian intelligence it is vital that the public gets answers as it is illegal to receive election donations from a foreign government.
"I will lead a Sinn Féin delegation consisting of Chris Hazzard, John Finucane, Michelle Gildernew, Elisha McCallion and John O'Dowd to meet the Electoral Commission tomorrow to raise concerns about potential abuses of the electoral system by the DUP."
