Video-based study examines Irish Sea 'scampi' stocks
A cross-border study into the quantities of Dublin Bay Prawn in the Irish Sea, an industry worth over £50 million-a-year to the fishing industry at first sale, has been completed.
The Aquatic Systems Group of the School of Agriculture and Food Science at Queen’s University and staff from the Marine Institute in Galway took part in the study which involved a new underwater video research technique.
The Dublin Bay Prawn, or Nephrops, is locally prepared in breadcrumbs or batter and sold as the popular dish known as ‘scampi’.
The Irish Sea stocks are exploited mainly in the waters west of the Isle of Man. Most landings in this area are by fleets from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland with a combined first sale annual value of about £10 million, making this the most valuable single fishery in these waters.
Describing the project Dr Richard Briggs of the Aquatic Systems Group said: “Early attempts to assess the state of Nephrops stocks were from interpretations based on the trends in the average size of animals in catches.
"More recently, however, methods have evolved which apply computer-based mathematical models to commercial catch data, as is done to assess fin-fish stocks such as cod.
"Now, a new method is being employed, using underwater video to study prawns in their natural habitat.”

Pharmacist Sentenced For Drug Offences
A 27-year-old pharmacist from Belfast has been sentenced to 180 hours of community service for unlawfully possessing and stealing controlled prescription drugs. Adam Hanna pleaded guilty to charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Theft Act 1969. The offences took place at a North Belfast pharmacy between January and March 2024.

DfI Outlines Congestion Mitigation Measures In Belfast City Centre
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has announced a series of measures aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Belfast City Centre. A strategic oversight group, comprising the DfI, Belfast City Council, PSNI, and Translink, has been formed to identify and implement effective solutions to reduce peak-time delays.

The SDLP has accused the DUP of creating a de-facto Irish Sea border on energy support payments for people in NI. SDLP Cost of Living Spokesperson Matthew O'Toole said that by boycotting the Stormont institutions the party are making it harder to get energy support payments to families in the North that are being received in other parts of the UK.

Latest figures have revealed that Northern Ireland businesses are more likely to use the internet for business operations than any other region in the UK. According to the International Benchmarking Study 2002, which has been published by DTI-led UK online for business, figures show that 63% of businesses in the province have a website.
