Jobs fears at Dairygold's Michelstown plant
Irish food company Dairygold have told unions and staff at its Michelstown plant that 500 jobs losses by the end of the year are "unavoidable".
The company, one of the largest employers in the Cork region, last year saw profits slashed to euro 5 million. Business analysts are predicting that the next round of financial figures from the company will reveal a loss.
Talks on a restructuring programme with rationalisation of jobs within the company commenced with unions earlier this year. Redundancy packages have received broad agreement from unions, but it is expected that there will have to be enforced redundancies if there are insufficient voluntary redundancy candidates.
Dairygold executives have warned that given the company's financial setbacks there are no other options.
The company have announced that as part of the restructuring strategy includes the outsourcing of transport services as well as an extensive programme of cuts right across the business operation.
It is feared that as many as 1,000 of the company's 3,200 employees may go as part of the radical restructuring of the company’s operation in Cork.
