SDLP Describes DUP MLA's Comments As 'Outrageous'
The SDLP has hit out at comments DUP MLA Emma Pengelly made over the flying of UVF flags.
SDLP MLA Claire Hanna described her comments as "outrageous" and said another year and no progress on the issue of irregular flag flying.
She said: "The flying of illegal paramilitary flags is particularly frustrating in what was designed specifically to be a shared neighbourhood. People have the right to fly legal flags from their home, if that's what they want, but no one has the right to project their view on an entire neighbourhood or community.
"For the South Belfast MP Emma Pengelly to dismiss fears saying no one wants to make a fuss is outrageous. These flags are designed to intimidate and divide. In the face of intimidation by paramilitary organisations, it's no surprise that people are frightened of going public with their concerns on the issue.
"Last year I tabled an adjournment debate in the Assembly seeking progress on this issue. It included constructive contributions from the Alliance Party, Green Party and the Ulster Unionists. But even at that time, the DUP was totally dismissive of legitimate concerns from residents."
